         The Body Sensor is used with eeZee Mouse products to control the computer’s cursor movements. It is operated by tilting slightly:  from side to side to control the left & right cursor movements, forward/backward to control the up/down cursor movements. A virtual joystick in space.

         The Body sensor utilizes tilt sensor technology, and provides extremely high precision signals to control the cursor with. Because of it’s tiny size and extremely low weight, it can literally be worn anywhere the user needs it!  Any part of the user’s body or any surface can become a joystick! OK, so how do I use this BODY Sensor to operate a computer?

  1. Place the sensor where it is to be mounted or worn, anywhere from head to toe! (within 60 degrees of level)
  2. Calibrate the sensor simply by pressing the “Home” button.
  3. Tilt the sensor slightly to begin moving the cursor slowly!  Tilting a little farther will speed it up.  Returning to home will stop moving.

     Your body has been transformed into a joystick with fully proportional cursor movement.  Cursor speed is proportional to the degree of tilt.

     Forward       Down
     Back          Up

     eeZee Mouse products have a Range of Motion (ROM) control the user can adjust to set the desired degree of tilt needed to reach full speed. A small ROM will require very little movement, while a large ROM requires more. Moving beyond this maximum will not affect cursor speed.

     One of our customers recently shared their clever mounting arrangement used with his eeZee Mouse CURSOR.  A Software Engineer spending many hours a day on the computer needed an alternative mouse to deal with RSI issues. He taped the Body Sensor to the top of a Wobble Cushion so as to be able to control it with his foot.  Of all the systems he’s tried over the years, he found this to be the “Smoothest & easiest to control of them all.”

     We’d like to put together an assortment of ideas of how Body Sensors can be effectively used. Please send us your ideas with photo’s if possible & we’ll get busy constructing an archive of useful methods. Please help us to find solutions for those that need them most.

Using the Body Sensor as an

Indestructible JOYSTICK

     Since the Body Sensor operates as a “Joystick in Space” it’s only logical that it can be used to build a customized joystick,
an indestructible one at that!

     Following are two examples of how to construct a basic joystick using easy to find parts at any hardware store.  The possibilities for construction are endless.

     With a little thought and ingenuity, the Body Sensor can be incorporated into a joystick solution to fit even the most challenging situations.  Remember, a “stick” may not be needed, as the Wobble Cushion above shows us.

     With the many joysticks already on the market for Industrial usage, standard Game Controllers, ... it’s likely there’s already one to meet your needs; just mount the Body Sensor to the top of the handle, fasten the cable & you now have an off the shelf joystick for computer access!

Sample Joystick #1

Parts Needed:

  • Body Sensor
  • Doorstop
  • Epoxy or Gluegun
  • Mounting surface

 

 

Directions

  1. Screw Doorstop bracket to Mounting surface
  2. Glue Body sensor to top of spring
  3. Attach spring into mounting bracket
  4. Strain relief cable

     This basic example is meant to demonstrate the concept of how a Body sensor can be mounted to function as a joystick.

     We would recommend modifying this design to make it more usable.

     Details to consider

  • The physical implementation of the joystick can be as small or as large as the user requires.
  • Anything from a simple spring to move elaborate mechanisms.
  • Dual sensor systems* can be utilized when Up/Down and Left/Right control needs to be separated.
  • The spring or movable mechanism should be able to return itself to the neutral position, while the stiffness can be tailored to match the users abilities.
  • A handle may be desirable on top
    • Round golf or tennis ball
    • T-Handle shape
    • May have an open strap to help hold hand in place
    • Custom imprint inside of users hand
  • Mechanism may be mounted to nearly anything. A mounting block, table top, chair arm, bracket....
  • Utilizing sturdy components can produce an indestructible joystick! See Sample #2.
  • The “Home” function of the eeZee Mouse is what calibrates the nominal operating position of the Body Sensor, thus being mounted “level” is not required.
    • The sensor does not need to be mounted perfectly level.  It operates best if it is within 45 degrees of level and will operate effectively all the way to 60 degrees away from level.
      • “Level” is defined as the plain of the earth
    • The mounting surface must not be moved during operation.
    • The Body Sensor requires a firm mount

 

Sample Joystick #2

     In this sturdy example, unfinished materials are demonstrated.  In practice the mounting block whether wood, plastic, or metal would likely be painted, the spring if used as shown would have shrink sleeving or a covering.  The cable is routed inside the spring through a hole in the base.

Step by step instructions are as follows:

Parts Needed:

  • Body Sensor
  • Stiff spring (furniture spring)
  • 3/4 CPVC End Cap
  • Mounting base ( 2” x 4” x 3” )
  • 5 min Epoxy, gluegun, or other....

Step 1.

Route sensor wire through middle of spring

Step 2.

Glue Body Sensor into End Cap. Any type of rigid adhesive. Top of sensor against inside edge of cap for upright joysticks,  opposite for inverted mountings, or at any angle as needed for in-betweeen.

Step 3.

Position End cap over spring.  A snug fit is necessary.  Glue into place

Step 4.

Feed wire through mounting base & strain relief. ( a small knot to prevent pulling on the sensor) Insert spring into a snug hole drilled into base. ( a 7/8” hole was used here) Glue into place

Step 5.

A plastic golf ball was cutout and snugly slid over the End Cap.

Step 6.

An indestructable joystick !
